本片根據真實事件改編。在南非的種族隔離政策解除之後，官方成立了「真相與和解委員會」，目的在於調查種族仇恨事件的真相。 擔任委員會主席的大主教戴斯蒙屠圖前往一座戒備森嚴的監獄，審問一名種族歧視的殺人犯皮亞特，在交談的過程中，戴斯蒙漸漸發現皮亞特是一位狡猾的罪犯，他並不要求原諒，反而不斷挑戰戴斯蒙的信仰和寬恕的底線，戴斯蒙也在過程中漸漸懷疑寬恕的可能性…。A mysterious criminal rolls into a small town planning to knock off the local bank, assuming it will go off without a hitch.
