1937年，中华民族进入了最为苦难的一段时期。日寇侵华，血腥的铁蹄踏遍神州，熊熊战火灼烧着祖国每一寸土地。在国难当头的危机时刻，留学多年的数学博士陈家鹄携日籍妻子惠子回国，希望奉献自己渺小的光和热。由于他在国外曾对日本的电报密码有所了解，因此陈成了日寇急欲猎杀的目标，也成为国民政府积极网络的对象。经过一番波折，他最终加入国民党军统下辖的密电破译机构“黑室”的一员，虽然憎恨国民党的腐败，但是受制于人的陈仍被迫为黑室工作。在此期间，他和惠子也因身份的特殊屡遭军统刁难。与此同时，我党人员成功打入黑室，为了新中国的建立做着最后的努力…… 本片根据著名作家麦家的同名小说改编。。Tyneside ship-builder Joe Maddison lost his faith in the trenches at the Somme in 1916.
